R. Antonio Vieyra Transtagano (1712-1797), a Portuguese emigré who had been teaching in London, was given the first professorship at Dublin for Spanish and Italian. Vieyra also compiled a Portuguese into English Dictionary (1773) of which the poet Henry Longfellow in 1847 remarked “His is the best Portugueze-English Dictionary... “
