Heinrich Friedrich von Diez, Prussian charge d'affaires to the Imperial Palace in Istanbul from 1786-90. He signed the formal alliance between the Ottomans and Prussians in 1790. He was also particularly important as an Orientalist and Turkophile, contributing much to Turkish studies. Many of these works, like the present one, were self-published. The owner of the book, August Tholuck, Protestant theologian, was also a lover of oriental languages. He stayed with Diez and wrote on Sufism and Mysticism. Tholuck’s main body of work, however, concerned Christian theology.
Dr A Tholuck’s stamp to title page.
