Important work on the Gothic language by the eminent self-taught philologist Joseph Wright, who established the scientific study of dialect in Britain. He was was an important early influence on J. R. R. Tolkien and much admired by Virginia Woolf. Along with many grammars and other works on early English, Wright’s greatest achievement was the six-volume English Dialect Dictionary which has not yet been superseded.
