Photo-album of the Kabardino-Balkaria in the North Caucasus. Beautifully illustrated throughout with Alpert's striking photographs (b/w). Max Alpert, photographer and photo-journalist frequently contributed to the iconic Soviet magazine USSR in Construction (cf Rodchenko, Shaikhet et al). He was born in Simferopol but settled in Odessa and enlisted in the Red Army in 1919. He worked later for Rabochaia Gazeta and Pravda. Some of his most notable work was a series of photographs of a hydroelectric plant on the Dnepr and a series on the construction of the Fergana Canal.
