First published in instalments in Novy Mir, Dudinstev’s landmark novel about an engineer opposed by bureaucrats as he seeks to implement his invention caused a sensation in the USSR. The tale became a literary symbol of the Khrushchev era although official reaction soon turned against the work and Dudintsev suffered years of poverty. In later years, however, accolade returned. In 2005, Mosfilm director Stanislav Govorukhin released the film based on the novel.
