The poet Sergei Yesenin (Esenin), 'pastoral-angel' 'tavern-rake' and bard of the Soviet Empire lived a short and turbulent life but posthumously became one of the most widely-read of 20th century Russian poets. He was a founder member of the avant-garde "Imaginist" group. He was married briefly to Isadora Duncan. Esenin is described as essentially 'Russian'; he is the peasant embodying tragic pathos and the forlorn dream of a rural idyll (McVay 1998). He killed himself in a Leningrad Hotel in 1925 after a short-spanned but meteoric literary career.
