Description

Small 8vo., 10 x 15 cm.. Original vellum over paste-boards, slips laced through binding at hinges, blind tooled ruled spine and panel to boards. Title in contemporary ink to spine, later “1570” to spine, initials “T.R.S”. and “1624” to upper board. Wick Episcopi Library label to paste-down. C.18th. ink annotations to fep verso in Latin. Woodcut device to title-page, Harburg coat-of-arms to C1 verso, Nikolaus Wegener’s woodcut device to errata verso. M Zuber’s work lacks title and dedication, presumed Ch Bismarcus, Halle, 1615. A1-Z1, Aa1-Gg7, errata, printer’s device, Finis, iv blanks, A3 - O(7). Original vellum very good but darkened and dusty from age as are fore-edges. Early repair with title page neatly laid down, some small loss of text. No loss but 2 gatherings loose, one protruding, pp. L2 and L8 loose but present. Occasional contemporary or early pencil and ink annotation and underscoring. Lacks title page to Zuber’s Gnomotypia. Thomas Mauer: (Triebel 1536 - Lüneburg 1575) German Protestant theologian and acclaimed poet. Learned in Latin, Greek and Hebrew, was known for his Latin verse. His father-in-law was musicologist Lucas Lossius. ‘Silesius’ is an acknowledgement of Silesia as an idealised homeland. The printer Nicolaus Wegener (?- 1608) also worked at Schleswig. Matthaeus Zuber (1570-1623) also acclaimed scholar of Latin and Greek, who published verse in Latin.
