On 29 July, feeling like a “pioneer,” he crossed the Sava River that separated the Habsburg monarchy from the Ottoman territory of Bosnia. Subsequently, after several months of unanticipated resistance, the region was “pacified.” Over the next forty years, hundreds of thousands of Austro-Hungarian citizens—troops, civil servants, tourists, colonists, and the Kaiser—crossed the Sava into what were called the occupied lands...
